Website Promotion – Page Titles

chamberOne of the simplest things you can do to make sure the search engines index your site correctly is to make sure that your page titles are accurate and informative.   For example, let’s look at the ‘Connect With Peers’ page of The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce website (http://thedalleschamber.com/peers.htm)

The title of the page (in the blue bar at the very top of your browser) could read

  • “The Dalles Chamber” or
  • “Connect with Peers” or
  • (heaven forbid) “Untitled”.

The first two help search engines a little but the actual title, “The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce, Networking Opportunities, YoPros, Business After Hours, Power Breakfast” is much more descriptive and conveys that this page is really about business networking in The Dalles.

Check your website’s titles and if changes are needed find the <title> statement in the page and edit away.  Don’t get too carried away or search engines may consider it spam, but you’re safe with 8-15 words that really convey the content of your page.
